In its third weekend of release, The Dark Knight took in an estimated $43.8 million, bringing its total domestic gross to an estimated $394.9 million.
The total was the second-best third-weekend in history: Spider-Man took in $45.0 million in its third weekend back in 2002.
In the process, The Dark Knight has surpassed the all-time grosses of several Star Wars films, as well as the comic-book hits as Spider-Man 3 ($336.5 million) and Spider-Man 2 ($373.6 million).
The Dark Knight is already less than $10 million — and about two days — away from passing Spider-Man ($403.7 million) and thus becoming the highest-grossing comic-book movie of all time.
The question is now how far The Dark Knight will climb the list of all-time domestic grosses. It currently stands in eighth place, but look certain to climb to at least second.
Less than $60 million separates second to seventh place. In second place is 1977′s Star Wars ($461.0 million, including re-releases), in third place is Shrek 2 ($441.2 million), and in third place is E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial ($435.1 million, including re-releases). Analysts expect The Dark Knight to surpass all of these, leaving only one stand-out: 1997′s Titanic ($600.8 million).
