The original Grendel, Hunter Rose, was the focus of Matt Wagner’s original Grendel series, which was unavailable for many years. Hunter Rose was not the focus of the subsequent series. After that series was completed, however, Matt Wagner returned to Hunter Rose, who has largely been the focus of Matt Wagner’s efforts with Grendel since around 2000.
In 1993, Matt Wagner returned to Hunter Rose in the stylish Batman / Grendel. Wagner had written and illustrated some memorable Batman stories (and would again), so the combination made a lot of sense.
In 1998, Wagner returned to Hunter Rose for the four-issue mini-series Grendel: Black, White, and Red. Each issue featured multiple short stories, illustrated by different artists. Each story was in black-and-white, with the only color being red. A sequel mini-series in the same format, titled Grendel: Red, White, and Black, appeared in 2002.
