Director Brad Bird Gives Update and Talks Challenges of Making Sequels with Incredibles 2

Academy Award winning director for Ratatouille and The Incredibles, Brad Bird is busy with the upcoming release of Tomorrowland, but still has time to talk about Pixar Superhero sequel, The Incredibles 2. When asked in an interview with Collider whether or not Incredibles 2 will be his next film, Bird said, “Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.” And when he was asked if any progress had already been made with the film, he said:

“Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”

The Bird directed Incredibles short film Jack-Jack Attack (2005) certainly says a lot about how much Incredibles on-the-side material Bird has already created. Being over 10 years since Incredibles release in 2004 (Okay, can you really believe it’s already been 10 years?), fans of the original are foaming at the mouths to see the sequel—and by “fans of the original” I mean now high school and college kids, and their parents. It will truly be a challenge for Bird to elate older fans, while reeling in the newer generation of Millennials, and he explains the issues with making sequels in an interview with IGN (via ibtimes.com):

“A lot of superhero films have been made since ‘Incredibles’ and it is kind of like an athletic field that’s just kind of dried up dirt now, with a few clumps of grass. And I think the challenge is, how do you step outside of that and say, ‘Hey, there’s another place for our heroes to go.’ So that’s kind of the challenge.”

Fans of Elastigirl, Mr. Incredible, Frozone, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack may have their hopes spoiled by Star Wars. As this writer reported earlier this week, Star Wars has lost their director Josh Trank one of their three spin-off films, and the slot is now open. Bird was the original choice to direct Episode 7, but due to his self-created Tomorrowland booking his schedule, he had to back out. There is speculation that after Tomorrowland’s release, Bird may be contacted for the Boba Fett spin-off job, but the world will just have to wait and see.
